Published: March 7, 2007

Racing bicycles offer speed and adventure. According to the Physics Factbook, the fastest running human is the American Olympian track and field star Michael Johnson, who set the world record of running 200 meters in 19.32 seconds on on August 1, 1996. That equals 10.35 meters per second. The speed nearly quadruples on a racing bicycle. The record speed for a racing bicycle is faster than a cheetah at over seventy miles per hour.

The fascination for bicycles began in the middle 19th century in Europe. Today, bicycles are used in many popular cycling competitions around the world. Cycling competitions come in many forms: road, track, mountain biking, and BMX.  The major brand names for bicycles include Raleigh, Schwinn, and Trek.

Raleigh has bicycles for all terrains, ages, and skill levels. In 2005, Raleigh become the sponsor for the Spike Professional Cycling Team based in Colorado Springs. The team's director, Bill Ramsay, applauded Raleigh for their long history and winning records in track biking races.

One of Raleigh's most famous bicycles is the Rush Hour Pro. The Rush Hour Pro  bicycles rose to fame through the Spike Professional Team. The Spike Pro Team took both the gold and bronze medal in the 2006 Pan American competition, riding only Rush Hour Pro bicycles. The Rush Hour Pro's frame is  further reinforced with thick gussets & double-sided stainless dropouts. This gives the frame maximum power transfer.

Founded in 1895 in Chicago, Schwinn bicycles are an American icon. Schwinn is the maker of some of the best known bicycles including Aerocycle, Paramount, Phantom, Varsity, Sting-Ray, Krate and Homegrown. Schwinn is known for leading the industry with innovative bicycles unlike any other in the business.

The Schwinn pro BMX rider, TJ Lavin, is known for his innovative style and for the highest jumps in the history of BMX. He received silver and two gold medals in the X games. Lavin rides his Schwinn signature model. For those who want to have the same bike, there are five similar BMX Schwinn Bikes modeled after Lavin's own. The 2005 Lavin 100 has a CR-Mo main frame, rear triangle dirt jumping, SS mounted U-brake pivots, and new 6mm plate dropout with 14mm axle slots all inspired by Lavin's BMX. This bike can be found on the Schwinn website for $249.99.

For thirty years Trek bikes have been applying the latest technology into everything that they do from the materials used in the bicycles to the lights in their buildings. On January, 29 2007, Trek was awarded the Environmental Stewardship Award for their continuous efforts in helping the environment. Throughout the years, Trek bike company has been giving back to the community and practices environmentally friendly manufacturing. Trek's latest efforts involved reducing electricity use by 435,488 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year by replacing lights with more efficient ones.

Team Discovery, sponsored by Trek bikes, had a great victory in the 2007 Tour of California. Rider Levi Leipheimer kicked-off the 2007 season with with a big win. He came in first place at 22 hr 17 min and 56 sec. Leipheimer beat second place Jason Donald's time by one second, giving the race a close and exciting finish.

Leipheimer road the Trek Equinox TTX. These Trek bicycles have a OCLV 110 carbon frame. This technology is said to be the lightest and strongest frame material in all of the industry. According to Trekbikes.com, OCLV 110 carbon frames is why Lance Armstrong's Tour De France victories stand at seven. Equinox TTX bike can be found on Trek's website for $5499.. If that is too much, Trek has thousands of bikes for all terrains, ages, skill levels, and price ranges.

Bicycles can take a person back to their youth and remind them of  what it was like to be child. They can also be a vehicle to explore and have an adventure. Bicycles can bring family and friends together. Add some technology, passion, and guts and a bike becomes a one person rocket speeding for the finish line.
