When most people think of Halls of Fame they think of baseball or rock ‘n' roll. Let's face it: mountain biking are not the first words that jump to mind. But there is a Mountain Biking Hall of Fame—in Crested Butte, Colo. Without a doubt, mountain biking gained popularity since it first crossed the scene in the 1970s.
Today, there are at least five different categories of this popular activity: cross country, downhill, free ride, dirt jumping, and street riding.
Mountain bike racing was officially recognized as a sport in 1990 by UCI (Union Cycliste International). The following year, the first mountain bike racing World Cup was held. Since then, it has become an official Olympic sport. It is popular in many areas of the world including South Africa, Mexico, Australia, U.K, and the United States.
For years, people had been taking treating their regular bicycles like mountain bikes by taking them out into the country or woods. Now, there are some differences in mountain or off-road bicycles that help them perform better when mountain biking. For starters, they have knobby tires and big, circular frame tubing. In general, mountain biking frames are smaller but stronger than the frames on other bikes. The bikes usually have shock absorbers or a suspension system that helps control the bumpy terrain. Also, mountain bikes can be spotted by their many gears.
For those who love mountain biking, taking vacations that either include or highlight the activity is a great experience. Hard core enthusiasts can go mountain biking out in the woods or mountains either alone or with a group. Mountain biking is a very individual activity, so many bikers do choose to go it alone. It is important to be self reliant on a trip like this because, often times, bikers end up miles away from other people and need to be able to repair broken bikes or flat tires, should a problem arise. For those less extreme or with families, mountain biking can remain an aspect of a trip without dominating the vacation. Families on camping vacations may enjoy a one-day, or couple-hour group trip into the woods. It is important to do a little research beforehand, though, because some trails do not allow bikes of any kind.
Everyone from mountain biking fanatics to small children can find a bike to suit their needs through companies like Trek, Schwinn, and Raleigh. Trek bikes entered the scene in 1976 and today carry road, mountain, WSD (women's line), urban, bikepath (comfy, upright bikes) and kids bikes. Trek bikes are so good they've even carried Tour de France champions to victory. Some Trek bikes can be color and feature customized. In addition to selling bikes, Trek sells mountain biking gear and other products which are available on their website, Trekbikes.com.
Schwinn was created in 1895 and creates bikes for categories such as road, comfort, mountain, kids, and even electric. They also carry clothes and accessories. Both Trek bikes and Schwinn bikes can only be bought through licensed stores and vendors. Raleigh has been around longest of these three companies. They were founded in 1887 in the U.K. Known for their heron logo; they carry bikes for all ages. Raleigh mountain bikes and other Raleigh bikes can be bought in the U.S. at Wal-Mart. They also sell parts and accessories.
Mountain biking is a versatile sport because people of many ages can find trails or fields that match their skill level. More than ever, mountain biking is an accessible activity due to the vast number of mountain bikes on the market. It's no wonder mountain biking has its own World of Fame.
